The family of Maurice Andre Lacey, Sr. , announce with deep sorrow and profound gratitude for a life well lived, that he has transitioned from labor to reward on February 5, 2026, surrounded by the love and light of his family.

Maurice was a devoted community organizer, educator, Master's Level Social Worker, professor, consultant, and unwavering supporter of humanity.  He served as a professor at Columbia University, where he poured into students with the same clarity, courage, and conviction that shaped his life's work. He was also a consultant for community gun violence prevention organizations, working alongside grassroots leaders and institutions committed to interrupting cycles of harm and restoring safety and dignity in our neighborhoods.

For nearly twenty years, he served as a core trainer with The People's Institute for Survival and Beyond, helping cultivate courageous conversations, challenge systems of oppression, and organize people for the greater good. His work was rooted in justice, truth, and a deep belief in the capacity of people to transform themselves and the world around them.

We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of thoughts, prayers, and countless acts of kindness extended to our family during this time.
