GWENDOLYN MORRISON Obituary

Gwendolyn Deloris Morrison was born on August 20, 1954, in Bennettsville, South Carolina to the late Ida Mae Morrison Paige. Baptized at an early age, Gwendolyn’s faith was a foundational building block in her life and Mount Zion Baptist church in Bennettsville was where her faith was ignited. While Gwendolyn was young, Ida Mae Morrison migrated to New York in pursuit of a better life for her and her daughter.  With her departure, Gwendolyn remained in the loving care of her grandmother, Sadie Morrison. At the age of 16, Gwendolyn joined her mother in Brooklyn, NY and completed her high school education at Bay Ridge High School. After earning her high school diploma, she pursued a business degree at New York City Technical College where she graduated with an associate degree and launched her medical billing career.  As a medical billing specialist at Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan, NY, she made plenty of friends and honed her skills.  In 1977, she changed the world by giving birth to Chance Ebony Morrison.  Gwendolyn continued to pursue her career goals at S.U.N.Y. Downstate Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, where she retired as a medical billing director at the age of fifty-three. During her time in Brooklyn, Gwendolyn was a devout member of Zion Shiloh Baptist Church and then moved on to Greater Zion Shiloh Baptist Church under Rev. GTM Jones where she served first as a member later turned President of their Sanctuary Voices Choir.

Shortly after the transition of her mother, Gwendolyn decided to move back to her roots in Bennettsville. Returning home allowed her to connect and strengthen the bonds with her family. Her resounding faith led her to a new church home, the Historical Sawmill Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a member to their Missionary Circle # 2, Church Choir, and the Kitchen Committee.

On Sunday, July 23, 2023 in Florence, South Carolina, Gwendolyn Deloris Morrison was called to be an angel. The memories and essence of who Gwendolyn was will be shared by her only child, Chance Ebony Morrison; her uncle, Eddie Johnson; siblings and cousins, Charles & Cynthia Emanuel, Kennard & Elaine Williams; nieces, Brittany Emanuel, Kierston and Keondrece Williams; nephews, Cory and Mark Emanuel; along with a host of family and friends. They will continue to say her name with love and laughter!
